Real Insights for Brave Entrepreneurs

Empower Your
Startup Journey

30 Years of Startup Wisdom

Hi, my name is Tony and I’ve started multiple technology companies over a 30 year period with mixed results whilst gaining a lot of experience, and for the record, some of them succeeded and some were murdered. There’s a saying in the startup world about scars and I can tell you from the heart that I’m covered in them. Some are self-inflicted, where the benefit of better choices or experience would have been invaluable; whereas some are given to you by those you meet on the journey.
This site is designed to be very real – you won’t find much fluff here, and no recipes for success; but you will find valuable insights, some guidance on what to do, and on what not to do – all with the caveat of “this is my opinion” and you must make your own decision as to whether it’s of any use whatsoever.

Anchoring Thoughts Before You Dive In

Before we start, let me place my anchoring thoughts – if the following 4 points worry you, then maybe just close the tab on the browser and flick through some memes.
1

Be the One in a Million

Get off your ass and have a go – the world teaches us to be workers, to be told what to do, to take home a salary so we can fit in the machine – I want to encourage you to break this thought process. A friend once said to me that 1 in 1,000 people have an idea and 1 in 1,000 of them will act on it – which makes a founder a 1 in 1,000,000 person. . Be the one in a million.

Resource, Not Recipe

If someone hands you a book / URL and says “this is how you do it” – treat it as a resource, not a recipe. That worked for them, at that time, in that industry – and it’s pretty much guaranteed that a combination of persistence, luck, and existing relationships contributed to the outcome than the uncovering of any grand plan.

Persistence

If you don’t have persistence, don’t start, as it will only end in tears. If you give up, the outcome is guaranteed – if you don’t, then you are one step closer to success.

Overnight Success

Any overnight success (i.e. less than 3 years between start and exit) is a fluke – ignore what you see on social media as it’s pretty much all fabrication. Most successes are like bamboo – they’ve been working hard underground for years and then suddenly, they breakthrough. Sadly, most will die underground, but as per point 1 – if you don’t have a shot, you will never know.
